Quick Notes from the Board Meeting
It was a busy and exciting Board meeting on Tuesday as we announced the renaming of Oliver School to wîhkwêntôwin School. wîhkwêntôwin is a Cree word that can be translated into English as ‘circle of friends’. This means the school will share the same name as the central neighbourhood where it is located. Thank you to the community league for leading the renaming process and the thoughtful consultation with students, staff and families. Watch the video and learn more about the renaming here.
Advocacy that school trustee elections should remain free from a political party system
The Board of Trustees will be writing a letter to the Ministers of Education and Municipal Affairs in support of the Alberta School Board Association’s policy statement that “school trustee elections should free from a political party system.” During this spring legislative session, the provincial government may present a potential change to the Local Authorities Election Act which would introduce political parties into school board elections. It is our view that it’s important for Trustees to be able to remain non-partisan in their service of students, families and public education. Read the full report here.
Approval of funds to support additional classrooms for special learning needs
Trustees authorized administration to direct up to $2,000,000 of the Division’s 2023-2024 operational budget to support the construction of Division centre classrooms required for the 2024-2025 school year. What’s a “division centre” classroom? These are classrooms to support specialized learning programs, such as Interactions, Connections, Community Learning Skills, Opportunity and more. Demand and growth in these programs is strong and the Board of Trustees is committed, within the context of constrained space and funding, to maximize as much choice for families in their child’s education as possible. Edmonton Public Schools Foundation
Thanks to all the School Council leaders in Ward F who came out to our last meet. Appreciation also to Strathcona High School for hosting the space. Some questions came up as to raising money for our schools through charitable donations. If you or the company you work for are looking to donate towards public education and Edmonton Public Schools, I invite you to learn more about the Edmonton Public Schools Foundation. This Foundation supports full day kindergarten, food nutrition, chromebooks for kids and more. You can also get your tickets to the Bids4Kidz Banquet!
