Updates
Quick highlights from the January 23, 2024 Board Meeting:
Educational Assistants – Staff at Edmonton Public Schools have been hard at work preparing the Educational Assistant (EA) Internship Pilot that 14 school divisions across Alberta are taking part in this school year. EAs empower students to reach their goals in diverse, equitable and inclusive classrooms. It was a pleasure to hear more about the pilot at this week’s Board meeting.
Class Sizes – Trustees also received an update on Division class sizes. The data helps tell the story of what we’re seeing in classrooms and across our schools. We know this is an important topic for families. Overall, class sizes in elementary and junior high have remained stable since last year, but high school class sizes have gone up. Also worth noting is that classroom complexity (number of students with mild/moderate/severe delays or English as an additional language) is also increasing. The Board continues to advocate for the best possible learning environments for Division students.

Division Recognition Awards
THANK YOU AND CONGRATS TO ALL AWARD RECIPIENTS – PARENTS, COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS, AND STAFF!
Winter Planning!
Great to spend some time together as a Board of Trustees connecting about our progress to date, governance, advocacy, and how we can best focus our work over the coming months in service to students, families, and our community.
Taste of Malmo
Celebration of World Arabic Language Day
Thanks to Malmo School for having me to your Taste of Malmo celebration as part of World Arabic Language Day. It was a pleasure to listen to the performances and to connect with community members.
Nellie Carlson School Council – Thanks for having me out to your January meeting. It’s always great to connect! Keep up the awesome work and much appreciation for all you do
Mr. Puffer Field Trip!
at Mckay Avenue School & Brander Gardens 6th Grade Class
Love learning about government? Or the history of Alberta’s first legislative sessions? Check out the Mr. Puffer field trip at the Historic McKay Avenue School Archives and Museum. Students even get to role play a debate and dress up as the first members of Alberta’s Legislature. Thanks to the Grade 6 class from Brander Gardens for letting Trustee Dawn Hancock and me join you on your field trip, and to our guide Brian for the excellent fun and learning. It was a great morning.
Making Board Chair Connections
Conseil Scolaire Centre-Nord (CSCN) is an important education partner of Edmonton Public Schools. This school division is responsible for Francophone education in Edmonton and a large portion of Alberta outside of Edmonton. Alongside Edmonton Catholic Schools and the City of Edmonton, CSCN and Edmonton Public Schools work together as partners in education under the Joint Use Agreement.
Thank you to CSCN Chair Tanya Saumure for taking the time to meet with me and share more about the work of your school division regarding Francophone education in Alberta. It was great to chat and I look forward to our work together.
